Checkin' In
Say hey good people! We had a great time at Pete's Saloon the other nite. It was good to see old friends and make some new ones too. Gene Carpenter played a few tunes w/the band and demo'd the great tone he is known for - he's also developing a very unique chromatic style that the crowd seemed to dig. Sonny Jr. blew up a storm w/the boys and then did a remarkable solo tribute to his mentor and friend, Sonny Terry - you had to be there to believe it - it was quite amazing indeed!

We've got a Turning Point gig coming up on Feb. 24th and will be joined by keyboardist Ed Train. Ed really rounds out the sound for us and adds some color to the music; I hope you can join us!

The snow is on the ground (and thankfully not in the air!) - we got pounded pretty good out here in the NY/NJ area but I think I hear pitchers and catchers grunting and pounding the mitts - give me some baseball soon please.

Thanks for your support - we hope to see you soon!

Peace,

CC

Winter is upon us....
The loss of a special friend is always tough...this one hurts more than words can tell. I thank all of my "Straight Up" friends for their prayers and kind thoughts for John Doherty. Also, rarely do we have a chance to feel the love and that was certainly generated at "The Hearty Party" - John felt it and appreciated it to the max. After a tough and long battle, the blood diseases and related complications took his body. They could never take his great spirit, good humor, iron will and intellect. I will never forget him and will never say goodbye...just "I'll catch up to you in a bit, Bro"

Little Walter, the king of the boss Blues harmonica wrote a tune for his best friend called "Last Night"...it's also for my best friend and Bro, John D.

Please come out to the Turning Point on Friday, Nov. 25th for a nite of Thanksgiving Blues!

Peace and Love,

CC

A bit of breaktime for the band...
Say Hey,

The band does not have another gig on the books until Sat. July 23rd at Wicky Lounge in Suffern, NY. We expect to get a call from the Savoy Grill in Newark for a gig prior to Wicky. The Savoy gig has turned into a pretty cool event...happy hour with some party people in a very hip setting...stay tuned for an update on that situation.

There are some other musical commitments that certain band members have and you can catch some of us here or there (can't divulge specifics due to legal reason!).

We'd like to thank everyone who came out to our last Turning Point gig. It seems like it rains every time we are there...but it seems like we always get a good turnout (knock wood) with some very appreciative people - Thanks for your support! We are back in Piermont on Sat. Sept. 24th @10:15pm - please mark your calendars.

The weather has gotten a bit steamy recently - have a safe, fun-filled summer. We hope to see you all soon!

Peace,

CC

The Hearty Party very heartful for sure!
It was a crappy, rainy night...the last one in April..BUT, it was a fantastic night...and it seemed like over 400 people of all ages came out in support of my very good friend John Doherty. The evening was buzzin' w/love and good spirit all night long! I thank all my Straight Up friends who came out in support of this important cause...Thank You very much.

A fun filled evening with lots of great raffle and auction items, live music and great people!

A very special thanks to Dan Hlavac, owner of The Sports Place for donating his establishment for this event - Dan is an incredibly generous man - also many thanks to his wife Barbara for her generosity and help too!!!

My good friends The Allen Wrench Band had the crowd up and dancing with their Classic Rock tunes and they were generous too in providing the backline for the event - thanks to Mike Luizzi, Brian Egan, Dermot Egan, Joe Bello and Gary DeSouza!

Of course the Straight Up boys Leo Jordan, Larry Graham and Chris Reardon deserve special thanks for patiently waiting and generously sharing their time and talent - I think the crowd liked us too!

Thanks again to one and all - and get better soon John!

Good Drummers are good to have!
Good drummers are definitely good to have...and typically they are involved in multiple projects (which can lead to scheduling challenges!).

Lately we have been using a rotation of excellent drummers including Linda Geiger, Paul Undersinger, Mike Severino, Harry Fiorilli and founding member Chris Reardon.

Our upcoming gigs will feature Mike and Paul and we enjoy working with all of these talented percussionists!

Now, if we could only obtain a huge amount of gigs to keep us all busy!

Peace,

CC

Blogging is Back!
Say Hey Straight Up Friends,

Sorry not to have posted in a while...lots of new stuff going on...first and foremost is the health and well being of my good friend John Doherty. John just had a heart transplant and is fighting two very rare blood diseases. All things considered he's doing pretty well. Both John and I thank you all for your good thoughts and prayers...please keep 'em coming! There will be a benefit for John on April 30th in Blauvelt NY. We'll be playing and I ask you visit the website that has been set up for the John Doherty Heart2Heart Fund for more information - you can find it at: www.andthebeatgoeson.net

We've been doing monthly gigs at The Savoy Grill in Newark, NJ and The Wicky Lounge in Suffern, NY. Both clubs are very nice; clean, good food and drink, nice people and more. Please check us out at either club (check out our gig list on the website). Also, we have The Turning Point coming up on April 2nd at 10pm. Mike Severino will be joining us on drums and we will be ready to rock the house!

Our guestbook had been down for a spell but now is up and running...please sign in if you get the chance (and have something nice to say!).

We are planning on hitting the studio real soon to begin recording and are hopeful we can make some good music happen on CD....but "talk is cheap" so stay tuned as we think it's time to put up or shut up!

Thanks for your continued support...we are working at getting some gigs on the other side of the Mighty Hudson and hopefully that will happen fairly soon. In the meantime, if you're having a party and need some Blues to Go, give us a call - never a delivery charge!

Peace,

CC

Tsunami Benefits
Say Hey!

The local (tri-state) Blues community has come together in a major way. Benefits to help tsunami victims have taken place in NY, NJ and Conn. with even more scheduled.

We had the pleasure of performing at the Wicky Lounge in Suffern, NY with several other fine bands. This took place on Jan. 23rd, the day after our big snow storm. Even tho' the weather could have been friendlier there was a respectable turnout with all the musicians involved showing up and playing their stuff.

Individually I had the pleasure of doing a country Blues duet thang with Son Lewis on Feb. 13th. This took place in Montclair, NJ at a club called "Just Jake's". Although Son and I hadn't worked together previously, I'd like to think we did a pretty good job. As I am usually "amplified" this was a great experience for me...much "rootsier" and indeed good fun!

Each of these benefits raised over $1K and if I'm not mistaken the money is going to Unicef.

Thanks to all the fine musicians who donated their time and talent, and thanks to all of our friends at Wicky and Jake's. Most especially, thanks to all who came out and supported these important events!

Peace,

CC

Wicky Lounge Tsunami Benefit - Jan. 23rd
We are pleased to participate in the Wicky Lounge's benefit for the tsunami victims. This will take place on Sun. Jan. 23rd and we will be doing a 45 min. set at 6:30 pm. More details will follow shortly so please stay tuned.

Mother Nature continues to remind us who the real "super-power" of the planet is. The day after Christmas tsunami wreaked death and destruction of such immense proportion that we have not even begun to comprehend the full scope of this tragedy.

And of course there is flooding, mudslides and snow storms in the western U.S....and brushfires in Australia...we pray for peace, respect and tolerance.

There are a number of charities that are providing assistance to the victims - please give!

A couple of new venues for Straight Up music!
We've recently had the pleasure of making some new friends and playing some new venues.

Wicky Lounge is in Suffern, NY and is a very cool place. This place offers a variety of excellent drinks and one of their specialities is the martini. Hosting a diversified clientele, Wicky Lounge has an air of sophistication about it while remaining receptive and responsive to our kind of music. The people there are very nice and were kind enough to invite us back (see our gig schedule). There is a large dining area where diners can enjoy some fine fare and for the music lovers in the house (and there seems to be a good amount of those!), there is an intimate seating area with couches and tables right near the stage - please check it out!!! We were quite pleased to see a number of friends we hadn't seen in a while (thanks for coming out!). We enjoyed ourselves and look forward to getting back there soon! (I will make a point of going up there to sample some martinis and report back my findings!)

The Savoy Grill in Newark NJ is in the most positive sense a very upscale venue. It is brand new and the comfort and pleasure of their clientele comes first. The stage area comes with a curtain (we kinda' felt like the Wizard of Oz) that opens and closes for the live music and the music must start out as a background setting and may remain there most of the evening - in other words "keep it down". This was a positive challenge and allowed us to work on dynamics and the "audience wall". We were quite pleased when a number of diners got up and danced!
Management seemed to like us and we believe we will be back. I must tell you that the place reeks of class without being too stuffy. The food was excellent, the staff attentive and the management very positive without being forceful. This venue is located in the historic Military Building, which I'm told also is home to WBGO. We look forward to returning and wish them great success going forward.

On Drums: Mr. Paul Undersinger
We've had the pleasure of performing numerous times in the past with Paul Undersinger.

Without making the "full-time commitment" Paul has graciously agreed to help us out with the rest of 2004's schedule...and he will hopefully consider signing up longer term. Either way, he definitely brings a special element of excitement and energy to the band and we hope you can come check us all out at one of our upcoming gigs...next up: Friday, Nov. 5th at Wicky Lounge in Suffern NY (check our gig list).

Monday, October 18, 2004

Drummer Chris Reardon is moving on...
Straight Up drummer Chris Reardon recently moved out to Rockaway NJ...a bit further from the other band members. Due to other commitments, Chris had decided to give up the drum seat he so capably manned the past coupla' years. We sincerely thank Chris for the professionalism, energy and talent he brought to the band and wish him the best going forward.

Joining us for our remaining 2004 gigs will be Mr. Paul Undersinger. We've worked with Paul numerous times in the past and he is a most dynamic and excellent drummer in his own right. We hope that you will come check him out at one of our upcoming gigs.

Thanks Chris! Thanks Paul!

Hope to see you all soon...and don't forget to vote!

Playland BluesFest A Smash Hit!
Thanks to all who came out to the Playland BluesFest yesterday. It was a Blast...Roxy and crew did a magnificent job putting it all together. Lots of great music and a good vibe all day long!

MC'd by the area's preeminent Blues DJ, WFDU's Dave Grogan, the day featured a variety of bands (lots of heavy hitters!) and styles of music.

I'd like to think we did a pretty good job and if that's true, please know that it was because so many of our "Straight Up" friends came out - THANK YOU!!!

Hope to see you all soon!

Peace,

CC

Back To School time - please drive safely...and stay in touch, ok?!
I think it's true that the older you get, the faster time goes by...interesting concept, eh?!

Well, it's back to school time and whether or not you are formally a student shouldn't preclude one from continually learning...so try to keep active both physically and intellectually and don't forget to vote.

We want to thank all of our friends, old and new who invited us to their parties and functions and made us feel so welcome...we look forward to seeing all of you again real soon.

Please sign our guestbook so we can add you to our e-mailing list and sorta' keep in touch...this will also encourage us to keep our hand in the music game, so to speak (it ain't easy you know? we need all the encouragement and support we can get!).

And, if you aren't busy on Sunday Sept. 26th, please come out to Rye Playland for what promises to be a very nice day of Blues - check out our gig list or homepage for more info.

Playland Bluesfest at Rye Playland - Sun. Sept. 26th!
This should be a nice segue from summer to fall/back to school days...please join us for a long day of exciting Blues. Beginning at 12 noon, this event is headlined by Roxy Perry and will feature some heavy talent including Rhett Tyler, Gil Parris, and more! We will hit for an hour set from 3-4pm and the show will continue into the evening...the price is right and the musical fare will be excellent...come on down!!!

Say Hey Straight Up friends!
I just thought I'd drop a line on what's going on with the band...

We've had a coupla' private parties recently and of course these don't get posted...we certainly enjoy doing them but miss all of you that we don't see often enough!  We have a coupla' more parties in the next few weeks and hopefully will get a gig that allows us to see some of you (and vice versa!).

My PC is still acting up and I have recovered some email addresses but am missing others - thanks to those who have sent me a message providing their addresses and I request others to send messages as well - please!  Also it would be nice if you "signed" our guestbook...kinda' makes it look like we really have friends and definitely your support and kindness is appreciated!

We are working on our originals and will hopefully get something on record by year's end...

Leo's back has been acting up and we are all hoping that he gets better real quick...

Me and my pal Sully had the pleasure of hanging out w/Paul deLay last week...he's simply amazing!  Great songwriter, great voice, astounding harp, and mucho charisma...I call him "Maestro" and if you ain't hip to him, do yourself a favor.  Based in Portland Ore., Paul doesn't get out here often enough...

Well that's about it for now...hope to catch up with some of you real soon!

Enjoy the summer....

Peace,

Milford Pa. - A real nice place to visit!
Last week we had the pleasure of playing a private party for the Milford Pa. Enhancement Committee. It was a beautiful day with lots of very nice people. We had played at the "Altec Lansing Presents The Milford Music Festival" earlier in the month and were fortunate enough to get invited back to this very lovely town . A good time was had by all...our new friends Dom and Carol were there and we also made some other new friends as well...perhaps we will do some more gigs out that way (which isn't really too far away).

If any of our Milford friends are reading this please drop us a line!

Milford Music Festival
We had a great time at the "Altec Lansing Presents The Milford Music Festival" a couple of weeks ago. It was a real professional setting and while the weather could have been a bit nicer, we still had a great time. The crowd was real nice to us, we made some new friends and have even been invited back to play at a private party this coming Saturday. We also were asked to possibly play a wedding for some Blues lovers perhaps this fall - let us know and we'll be there! We did caution the couple that we don't have any traditional wedding music...just what they heard...that seemed to be just fine with them so we are hoping to get back there for the lovebirds!

Thanks Milford Pa. for your warm hospitality - see some of you this weekend!

KGMF Blues Revue a smash hit!
If you were there you know how fantastic the evening was...if you weren't, oh well.

The evening started out with some three part harmony done by Mike DePaolo, Bob Seda and Vinnie DePaolo. Smooth and silky, these guys did a "Star Spangled Banner" that could be used anywhere, anytime...it was excellent and the audience knew that something special was happening.

Yours truly and the Boys played a few tunes to settle things down a bit...since I'm the homeboy in Emerson, of course we well received!

Next up, EZ Mike Luizzi (one of my best buddies) - Mike performed an acoustic set and sincerely connected with the audience and Griffin family...I had the great pleasure of doing some tunes with him and truly enjoyed it. Mike has performed several times at Emerson fundraisers and has some old friends in town who were real happy to see him. Of course he made some new friends too!

SaRon Crenshaw came on and absolutely tore it up. Utilizing the "house band" (Leo Jordan, gtr., Dave Fields, kbd., Glenn Govier, bass, Chris Reardon, drms.), SaRon seamlessly led the unit in playing some of the best Blues heard anywhere. The crowd went nuts for SaRon and he worked it hard. SaRon is a very dynamic singer and guitarist and also a tremendous performer - he really had the crowd in the palm of his hand and received a standing ovation at the end of his set...as SaRon said, "you got to leave them wanting more" and that he did!

After that, I had to settle things down with some "blah blah blah" stuff and then we had Leo Jordan come up with Larry Graham and Chris Reardon to perform the classic, "Sleepwalk". Leo was soulful, sensitive and smooth and the audience was thrilled by his performance.

Ending the first half was the acappella trio of the DePaolo Bros. and Mr. Seda performing "Desire"...very cool and very much appreciated, with a little humor thrown in...I used to live in NYC and the thing I miss most is the fine acoustics of a building hallway...these guys would definitely work that angle to the max!

The Roxy Perry Band opened the "2nd Act" with a blistering set. Roxy was in fine form both singing and harping and was complemented expertly by the super talented Dave Fields. Dave is one of the most musical people I know and he didn't disappoint. Turning it up a notch he received ovation after ovation. Roxy has a big gig at a festival in Red Bank NJ tomorrow but she didn't hold back...sassy, swinging and sweet, with a real strong version of "Summertime" that made us realize what time of the year it is. Roxy's band included Bob Fusco on bass, Ed Train on keyboards, one of the best Blues drummers around Linda Geiger and of course Mr. Fields - thank you Roxy Perry Band and thanks to all who made this a great evening.

The Straight Up Blues Band came out for a coupla' more tunes and then we finished up with Vinnie DePaolo on vocals leading a jam on "Dixie Chicken" (I think).

The night ended with a slow Blues intrumental, "Blues For Kyle"...with Dave Fields (gtr.) and Ed Train (keyboards) rounding out the sound...a great night all around.

Many, many thanks to Glenn Govier on sound (and bass w/SaRon and on our jam at the end) - he worked his tail off and the music sounded great due in large part to his efforts on the "sound package". Also, my main man, Mike "Bull Boy" Clark as the stage manager, was relentless in his efforts...with out these two gents, this show would never have taken place.

Spc. Kyle Griffin, US Army - born Sept. 11, 1982; killed in Iraq May 30, 2003. God Bless you Kyle and all of The Griffin Family.

Please join us at Emerson Jr. Sr. High School for a solid night of Blues perfomances featuring The Roxy Perry Band, SaRon Crenshaw, The Straight Up Blues Band, "EZ" Mike Luizzi and more!

Hey Harp Heads! A visit to the Sonny Jr. Amp Factory
Me and my pal Sully visited Sonny Jr. this past weekend and tried out several of his amps. As many of you know Sonny is a tremendously talented harp player...seriously! Equally important for us harp nuts is that Sonny is THE SOURCE when it comes to harp amps. He's forgotten more about amps than most of us will ever know. I am not being paid for this endorsement people, but know this: the SJ 410 is superb! Each one is built like a tank and the craftsmanship is top notch...Sonny is helping re-establish the term "Made In America" as meaning "can't get no better than that"! I have had the pleasure of playing through most of the boutique harp amps and I think there are some pretty good ones out there...BUT there is only one SJ410...competitively priced and built to last, this amp will bring out the best in you as a harp player...but don't take it from me...visit his website at: sonnyjr.com and read the reviews (which come w/emails so you can communicate directly with SJ amp owners)...am I right Sully?!

Suffern Library Gig - very cool indeed!
Thanks to all of our friends (old and new) who came out to the Suffern Free Library this past Sunday. We really enjoyed ourselves and are looking forward to our next "library gig". If you get the chance to see live music in a library setting you really should. It is very cultural and a great setting for the entire family. Check your local library for more information.

This PSA has been brought to you by The Straight Up Blues Band!

Bogey's Blues Blast!
We had a Bogey's Blues Blast in Clifton last nite...joined by guitarist Don Leich from Big Mike and The Perpetrators and Gene Plotnick on harp and vocals there was some serious Straight Up Blues happening...Donny was his typical fiery self and in great form (if you dig Blues guitar, you dig Mr. Leich)...Gene had that serious Chicago style (very "Cottonesque"); tone to the bone, harp going on...both guys really cranking the energy level up a notch or three! Also thanks to Hurricane Bob on harp and Joe on drums for rounding out a party kinda' nite - very nice! And of course thanks to all of our other friends for coming out and having some fun with us....see you soon!

Our Next Gig: March 20th (First Day of Spring)
Say there baseball fans! It's been a while but we are gearing up for our gig at Bogey's in Clifton on Sat. May 20th @10pm....seems like it was another tough winter and who knows, we may get some more tough weather between now and then...either way, think about coming out and celebrating a new season with us...BTW we just got another date at The Turning Point in Piermont NY (more on that later)...hope to see you soon...

All Quiet On The Straight Up Front - A Straight Up update
We have a bit of a break...next scheduled gig is March 20th at Bogey's in Clifton NJ. During this time we would like to learn some new tunes and write some new ones as well...so next time you catch us you might say "hey there's a new one"!

We performed for the children and staff at St. Agatha's in Nanuet NY last week. We had a good time and I think the kids liked us. Some very cool people there (including the adults)...Larry became an "uncle" for the umpteenth time, making new friends and promising (or threatening) to come back and ride the horses! It was a humbling and enriching experience...count your blessings people; say a prayer every now and then, and even more importantly: commit some kindness.

Our Southbound (Valhalla NY) gig was fun...the food and ambience is excellent...nice owners, staff and clientele...you like BBQ? Check it out!

I believe we will have some new pictures from our Turning Point gig coming up soon...so please come back and check for 'em...and we hope to be back at that esteemed venue in the near future.

Be safe and enjoy the good weather....more news to come this way soon!

Mmmmmmmm, something smells good: Bar-B-Que and Blues this Friday, Feb. 20th @ Southbound Bar-B-Que, Valhalla NY 10pm!
OK, OK, call me partial...I just happen to think that Barbecue and Blues is kinda' like Muddy and Walter...Ruth and Gehrig...ying and yang...Laurel and Hardy...Cotton and Spann...Bogart and McCall...or Starsky and Hutch (sorry 'bout that, got carried away there for a second)...but hey, speaking of the Bambino:

We will be "breaking in" at Southbound in Valhalla, NY this Friday, Feb20th @ 10pm. Southbound is located at:

Southbound Bar-B-Que . . . (914) 644-7427

The Bayou in Mt. Vernon - 45min. set - Thursday 1/29 @9:30pm
The Bayou will be showcasing several bands next week...in fact they may even be calling it a "Battle of The Bands"...please note that we do not compete with our music (never have, never will)...however, as we need new places to play (we miss Isabel's too), we have agreed to "showcase" the band (while trying not to feel "cheap" at the same time - will you still love us in the morning?) and will be performing a 45min. set on Thursday, Jan. 29th at 9:30pm. We requested the earliest slot (which will hopefully decrease any...como se dice?...CRAP...yes, crap...associated with competitive musical events). We will pretty much hit and run...if you aren't busy and in the neighborhood, feel free to check it out...I think it's a $5 cover and who knows, if you stick around you might hear some good music!

Please visit their website for additional info...my friends tell me they have very good food too!

Stay warm!
